Process to get the permit

IF YOU ARE 16 YEARS OLD.

Step 1: Ace the Knowledge Test:

  • Your high school usually offers the written knowledge test. Take advantage of it!
  • Don't fret if your school doesn't. Our website provides practice tests, and we can administer the test at our office in Kenilworth. Need extra help?
  • Remember: Passing this test is crucial to starting your permit journey.

Step 2: Secure Your BARCODE TEST RECIEPT:

  • Once you pass the knowledge test, you'll receive a "Blue Card" or "Barcode receipt." This is your ticket to acquiring your permit.

Step 3: Initiate the Permit Process (Choose Your Path):

  • Option 1: Visit our office. Bring your ID and Blue Card. We'll handle the paperwork.
  • Option 2: Relax at home. We'll come to you for a convenient information-gathering session.

Step 4: Submit Your Application and ID:

  • We'll take care of sending your application and original ID (birth certificate or passport and SSN) to the NJDMV. Allow one week for processing.

Step 5: Get Ready to Drive (Temporary Permit Arrives):

  • Once we receive your temporary permit, we'll schedule your mandatory 6 hours of driving instruction. These sessions are divided into four 90-minute blocks, and we'll bring our cars to you!

Step 6: Validate Your Permit:

  • After completing the 6 hours of driving, we'll resubmit your temporary permit and original documents to the DMV for validation. Remember, they only accept originals.

Step 7: Practice Makes Perfect (Permit in Hand):

  • As a newly minted 16-year-old permit holder, you have one year to practice driving under permit restrictions. Upon turning 17, you can take your road test at the DMV.
  • If you get your permit at 17, a 6-month waiting period applies before your road test. For 21-year-olds, it's 3 months.

Step 8: Road Test Ready Vehicle (DMV Requirements):

  • Your car must be in good condition with a valid inspection sticker.
  • Red decal stickers on the front and back license plates are mandatory.
  • Ensure all headlights, tail lights, and the emergency handbrake are functional.
  • Up-to-date registration and insurance are essential.

Need help with the road test vehicle? We can help! This additional service includes a one-hour refresher course, pickup from home, transportation to and from the DMV, and use of our car for the test (additional fees apply).

Remember: We're here to guide you through every step of your journey to getting your driver's license. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions!

Good luck on your driving adventures!
